I think we stopped here on the way out to the airport, which is rarely when you're looking to have a great meal. But it was a great meal. Popenguine is a small town on the Petite Côte south of Dakar — white buildings, bougainvillea, the Atlantic right there. Le Balafon sits up on the cliff with a terrace that looks straight out to sea.
The fish comes whole, grilled, with roasted potatoes and whatever sauce they're making that day. The prawns are excellent alongside. There's a bottle of white wine on the table and the ocean is right in front of you and the afternoon is going well.
It has the atmosphere of a place that is exactly what it needs to be and nothing more. It doesn't need to try very hard. It's been there a while. People know it.
