Walk in for the first time and the ceiling will stop you. Gold everywhere, baroque detail, a painted dome, the organ pipes behind the stage lit in deep purple. It looks like it belongs in Vienna or Paris, not in this quietly utopian Swiss city by the lake.

The programming is serious — classical music is the main event, but they also do jazz and occasionally something more unexpected. Louis CK did standup here a few years ago, which tells you something about the range. They also run a family programme on certain Saturdays, which is a good reason to bring kids.

Check the programme at victoria-hall — tickets sell out for the good ones
Saturday family concerts are genuinely good for kids — not dumbed down, properly performed
Sit in the upper balcony if you can — the view of the hall from up there is part of the experience
Worth going even if the programme isn't your thing, just for the building
