Book the top floor. The view over the Notting Hill rooftops is worth the small premium and it still comes in under £200 a night — honest money for this part of London. Not the Connaught, but solid, well-located, and the room does what it needs to do.
Skip the hotel breakfast. There's a good bagel spot and a coffee place a few blocks away. Walk down through the neighbourhood, pick something up, take your time. The Central line is right outside for getting into the city when you're ready.
If you're partial to west London — and you should be — this is the base.
