West 10th between Seventh and Waverly, down a small staircase. Opened in 1994 by Mitch Borden — former Navy submariner, jazz violinist. Basement room, sixty seats, two sets a night. Reserve online. If it's full, Mezzrow across Seventh Avenue is their sister club. Go there. You always meant to see a jazz club in New York. You just never knew where. Smalls.
Tip
Get some half-sour pickels and a Dr. Brown's soda to go with your sandwich. Pastrami Queen has been on Lexington Avenue since 1956. It's kosher. It's quiet by New York standards. The sandwich arrives and you understand immediately why it has lasted this long. You want a proper pastrami sandwich and a half sour pickle like a normal person? Go to Pastrami Queen.
Restaurant & Bar
Midtown is a nightmare, but this place is a dream. Tucked into one of those strange alleyways Midtown apparently has, sort of an outdoor street that also feels like a covered tunnel, is a beautiful brasserie with one of the nicest zinc bars I’ve seen in a while. Grab a beer, order something from the raw bar, or get a table and settle in for a meal. The food is classic French brasserie fare: good, but not life-changing. That’s not really why you’re here. You’re here because it’s an oasis of good aesthetics in the heart of Midtown, and most people walk straight past it.

If you're in New York and want the Jewish Deli experience, half sour pickle, some smoked fish, etc. Barney Greengras will do the job. It's been on Amsterdam Avenue since 1908, a NYC institution.
